Reasons to whine

No this isn't about me crying to myself or complaining about the world yet doing nothing about it. See Star Ocean The Last Hope came out over here last week and I got the game and finally, finally, I can say a pretty boy Japanese RPG hero actually finds a pretty damn good reason to whine and question himself for once.

Pretty Major Spoilers for The Last Hope will follow.

So in a lot of ...JRPG's as they are now known... have the main character going through a bout of depression. Sometimes it's justicifed, others they come off as whiney bitches who are going on about nothing in a time when they really shouldn't be stomping there foot and complaining that the world does not relolve around them. "Ah my best friend has been shot in the leg in one of the 10,000 battles I've fought through that would of otherwise killed him because of my opponenents actions, I am failure as a human being." "Ahhh a random strong badguy defeated me and my friends and said life is meaninless. We all got out alright but I am depressed because I'm not the strongest in the universe and can't protect everyone 100% of the time despite that no one actually died anyway. I'll have to add an extra 2 feet to my sword."

Stuff like that.

But what is the main character in Star Oceans whine fest about?

"Wah, because of a decision to trust someone I didn't feel completely confident in, Earth and it's entire 6.3 billion population has been completely destroyed. The very source of all my motivation, hope and dreams, have been completely wiped out in front of my eye's. Wah I'm such a whiney... no wait.. That IS pretty fucking bad."

Seriously, because Edge decided to trust an obviously creepy woman, Earth, in the 1950's, is destroyed, with not even space dust remaining. It ends up being an alternative universe (thank you Sci-Fi and especially you Star Trek *salutes*) but, you know, as far as reasons to whine go, being partly responible for killing 5.3 billion innocent lives (we'll assume Earth only has 1 billion non-innocent lives on it in the 1950's) is a fairly good reason to have one. Plus its a real kick in the teeth when the reason you get out of your bed in the morning is because you're one of the last ditch efforts to secure a future for Earth and it's people and you truely believe in that cause.

So yeah, he whines, he moans, he stops saying his one liners in battles for a while, and it can get a little annoying seeing him just be despressed everywhere but for once I can actually get behind it and go "Yes, that man has a reason!"

You know what doesn't appear on English TV adverts:

<lj-embed id="30" />

Advertisements for books. Why is this? Too many books to decide which ones to make for em? Too expensive in England? Because people care more about body sprays and pretending 1000 attractive women will lose all self control around you if you have the same type 50,000 other men use?

The English name of the book is "The Name of the Wind" written by Patrick Rothfuss and is a rather enjoyable read, and one I'm looking forward to the rest of the series. Linking to his site here: http://www.patrickrothfuss.com/content/index.asp

I kind of wish every other reviewer who wants to praise a fantasy writer stopped saying line like Best fantasy writer since J.R. <lj:music>The Next Door (English version)</lj:music>

Today I got up at 8 O clock, threw on my clothes, collected my package, got back home, opened said package, watched the free movie with more then a little dissapointment, installed the package contents to my Xbox and from that point on...

I've been playing Street Fighter 4. Oh yeah.
(I must say I'm amazed at how much attention this game has been getting considering alpha and 3 was largely ignored by anyone other then fans)

So! Things I'm surprised about it?

The english voices is probably the top.
I thought I'd be "Oh god, aside from Cammy, all of them must be Japanese!"
Instead I've only got the odd one or two on Japanese, and thats more out of just for the feeling sake of it rather then annoying voice work. Sakura's voice was the biggest surprise, I was ready to turn it onto Japanese without even listening to the english voice but she had this sweet, innocent, yet spunky cute voice in a cut scene, which was pretty okay... then I heard her odd "oppsie!" in a fight when she missed an attack... And now I adore her with that voice. ADORE!

Oh! Seth, the boss, is someone who I hated when I looked at him. I despise that design of his... however his english voice is pure silk to my ear drums and so.. I can't actually hate him anymore. I could listen to him chatter away all day.

But yeah, I've been online for a lot of today, then I went through arcade getting everyones ending. I hate them. They're horrible. The whole "telling one overal story" is just cack. Its Street Fighter, only really anal fans really care about the overal plot, a plot that capcom reinvents every new game and add on, and it just leaves some endings feeling short and stunted.

ending spoilers here

Chun-li's has her downloading data in a locked room with smoke coming in, she lies unconious, then you see her awake in Guiles arms with the data pad.. Fade to black. The end. Its like, I was waiting for her at her dad's grave, or training somewhere or.. doing something!! working at an orphanage of dead martial artists or something!! ANYTHING!! Fei-longs is the worst though - Seth is all "Yeah I did that stuff to ya movie cause ya fiction was too close to the truth oh shit I've ben killed with a knife" and Fei-long stands there the whole time looking angry, fade to black. Its terrible! I'd rather have the still picture endings you got in SF3 over this.

But it doesn't matter because: The in game movies are awesome. The in game talking sections are a nice touch and in the end Street Fighter is about the fighting, and my god Yay! The fighting is as great as ever.

The xbox controller is awful for fighting with though, my thumb has blisters and i've still only managed to get the D-pad to do what I want 30% of the time. It kinda gives fights a "Oh this may of been a better fight if I could actually do the move I wanted" if you win or lose.

I really, really want downloadable characters for this. I've heard two opposing comments on this. One says the director doesn't want to have this because he doesn't want it to be a "Rich mans game" where only those with all the money get to have all the best stuff (but I suppose its better to release a full priced remake with 2 added characters every 6 months instead?) and another says they've already made Dee Jay and T-hawks moves. So I don't know.

Still characters I personally want are:

Karin: I want Sakura's rival in there, especially with an game talking fight scene you get in arcade. Ryu has his, let Sakura have hers. Plus.. Karin!! She's, like, awesome. PLEASE!

Makoto: CHEST-O!!!

Ibuki: Ninja school girl with neck snapping action!

Oro: Old hermit who's so powerful he keeps one hand tied up.

R. Mika: Honestly, I just want to see her go against Zangief and El Fuerte. Plus, you know, flying butt attack.

Dudley: Gutter trash! This guy needs to have a boxing match with Balrog. Seriously. Plus he's just better then you and me.

Ones I never EVER want to see again:

Gill: I still HATES him! I hated him when I first saw him. I hated him the first time I faught him. I doubley hated him when he ressurected. I just Hate him. NO!

Urien: I hate him about as much as I hate Gill. Has little to do with how he plays, I just can't stand him. Plus he reminds me of Gill. Then again so does Seth.

... Thats about it. I hate those two.
If any of the others turned up, from any of the other series, I wouldn't mind. I wouldn't be OH YAY! But there would be Yay'age to be had because the rest all have some weird charm about them somewhere.

.... I think Eagle needs to be again in it at some point as well. Or they could totally blow us away and have every Street fighter 1 character come back reimaged (at least the ones they haven't done already).

Street Fighter 4!
Cool! It actually happened!

Yes, that rather long title is a game. An MMO game of all things.
Those of you who know of the Shin Megami Tensei series, or the Persona series, or even the Digital Devil Saga series, may have heard of it. Well in a rather fun turn of events the MMO is being released in English, and for free! Check it out: http://megaten.aeriagames.com/

Yes! Digital Devil Saga goodness, for free! There is a closed beta signup going and I am one of those taking part and apprently they're still looking for more people. File Front is giving away.. something.. to do with it. a sign up card or something. I said I'd spread the words to my friends, or, non-friends even, so here I am.

So far it seems to be in the spirit of the Shin Megami series. I've battled slimes, made concrates with Pixie's nd Kodana's and ya stats and all made up as the same stuff as all the other series previously mentioned. Its set between Shin Megami 1 and 2, so God hasn't been killed yet.

So yeah! Word spread!

A Left 4 Dead post, by Scott Hannah:

Yeeeee.
That is right. Yeeeeeeee.

It is the sound of my gun fire. Its the sound of a thousand swarming zombies running at me. Its another bloody started witch. Its also my voice going super sonic high pitch as I'm having so much godamn fun as me and my foriegn buddy run for the helecopter, only for a hunter to pounce him, so I let loose the last of my bullets and help him up as quick as possible as a Tank can be heard in the distance and some rubble just got thrown over our heads.

I've played the game with a friend, and it was damn good.
I played the game with some random people and it was a laugh.
I just played it with some foriegn speaking dude who's language and accent I can't place at all... not that that means much coming from me... and we found that adversity can overcome any language barrier.

Sure we couldn't let each other know of our plans for the oncoming swarm. Sure we couldn't tell each other exactly what we found and where and why I closed that door. But surprise and alarm sounds are universal, a cry for help can be strangely understood and a thank you for hauling each other asses into safety rings true no matter what words are used.

I'll have to get a Gold account if I want to continue playing this game once my 1 month trail period runs out. I'm against Mircosoft squeezing even more money outta me for something that should be free but playing Left 4 Dead alone, while fun, s barely 1/4 of the experience ya have when playng with others.

Plus.. Shooting zombies. Awww yeah.

Favorite character: Bill
Favorite zombie: Boomer
Favorite senario: don't know its name but I like the out house on the lake. Its probably because it kicked my ass so many times on advanced but I've got a liking to it. The corn fields are fun too, as is the hospital, as is the air port.. ah hell, I can't pick a favorite.
Most embarressing death: The helecopter was getting ready to land and I said I clear the helepad. I shot down a good 20 zombies, threw a pipebomb and got a load more away. I'm getting all cocky saying "That all you got!?" the next thing I know a Tank jumps right in front of me and BAM, flicks me off of the roof and I sky dive to my death.

All I've done the 300 tactic. Confine yaself into a small narrow area with a team mate watching ya back and where there numbers mean nothing! Never surrender, never retreat!

I liked Fallout 1 but never played 2, disliked Oblivion, but decided to give it a go. I totally love it and actually prefure it to the orginial, which I hear is an odditiy in gaming society (But then its an oddity not to adore really old games and not hate ALL remakes or new games in a series these days, unless its 2D or something), though not quite as odd as prefuring Fallout 2 to 1, apprently. Or so my sources have said.

I have an Xbox live thing but it is just a Silver account. Because I wasn't hyped to astronomical heights like I was with Fable I didn't feel any crushing dissapointment in what was cut out.

I spent a fair amount of the time I did play the game Blacksmithing. Pressing the A button at the right time to earn money, do it enough times in a row and earn even more money. Earn enough money and get a raise and make people look at you in awe over ya smithery skills. Repeat and repear. Once I had enough money to buy that Iron pistol and Sword and high class wear and hotpants I wanted. I outshot some bandits, learned what maked those Grobb things and started a Woodchopping job.

Golden Axe: Beast Rider

So, as I said I would last time, I got the game Golden Axe: Beast Rider for the 360 and have played it for about two and a half hours, so I shall give my first fleeting opinion on it in the form of good and bad points.

Good point: I do Like the graphics, people are kinda shiny I suppose, probably layered with sweat and blood, but it all fits together. Nice and brutal too. Conan-esq even. Its not jaw dropping amazing though but it's nice enough.

Bad point: The graphics and game now and then freezes for a brief second here or there. Its nothing major or game breaking but I've had to happen three times in the time I've played it. I don't know if its the game itself, or the disc, or my 360 though.

Good point: Sword fighting is fun. It has a little more depth to it then I thought it would, actually. As well as the different combo that rely on your button pressing timing, or how long you hold the button, there is also Parry and Evade. At times it can be a little frustrating, as I'm pretty sure I pressed the button but bang I'm hit again and oh bugger there goes my energy, ah someone else is attack, press the button.. I DID but bang I'm hit again.. AARRGH. Still, most of the time I feel its simply ME who has to improve using it, rather then the game being horribilly unfair.

Bad point: Too many magic users! They're introduced very early, and while they die after a good combo or two, I have found magic users to be the bane of my exsistence in this game. So far I have blue firebal shooting shamens, or rock dropping shamens and BOY do they totally piss me off at times. Expect to be hit in the back, or on the head, while surrounded by foes quite often. You have to dodge the rocks, and with the firebals you can parry them back but the timing is fairly presice, so not very helpful when it has come from behind or the side thanks to the camera angle.

Good point: Pints of blood flows from the hoards of enemies. I have found it rather amusing the different ways you can chop people up, if it takes ya pleasure to do so, with bodies being shopping in half, heads rolling or arms being thrown from there owners. All in good fun. There is a nice amount of enemies as well without it being 99 nights 200 enemies charging at you kinda deal.

Bad point: Puzzles! Seriously! Who thought it was a good idea to put switch puzzles in a golden Axe game. To be fair most of the time they aren't hard or anything, and a fair amount of hem were at least used well, so when you back tracked something new would pop up, but they still feel out of place. I also once had to go at least 1 minutes without killing anything and wondering through a level trying to find a switch, which was a little annoying. My favorite type of "switch" puzzle is the scarifice pillars/spikes/doors though, where you have to kick an enemy onto a spike, so it opens a door.

Good point: The annoying little imps wearing green and blue are back, as well as a new colour, yellow, for gold. They run and scurry around like the imps should, even giving off annoying little impish laughs. Also the Golden Axe camping music starts playing in the background when ya around them as well. It was a unneeded but thoughtful touch, I feel.

Bad point: I have still yet to summon lava exploding from the ground, or a giant dragon to breath fire upon my enenmies. I do have magic, a fireball, an exploding flame that goes around me and a throwable Golden Axe, but no collecting magic poitions to summon some big awsome screen filling Wazoop moment yet. I guess I'll have to earn it, if its in the game.

Good point: Beasts! And some are even the beasts from Golden Axe. They look so nice/mean/beasty, and riding around on them and clawing/slashing/burning through enemies is a riot. Hurrah! All the fun of the old games. also some of the really bigger new beasts are awesome, especially when yo have to take on a fully armour plated one. Eeee.

Bad point: Beasts! Just as the way they feel like riding a giant unweildy beast is great, its also a bloody pain at times, much like the old game. They can be so slow to do things after an attack, or hard to turn around, or easy to get trapped. Being knocked off can also be a pain, as its not always 100% clear why they one slash knocked you off when you've taken one like it before.

Good point: There's this tribute thing, where you give all the gold you got through a level to ya God, that seems to unlock a lot of things as you progress through the game. Its a nice little insentive to redo some area's. Also theres a grading system for when you finish each area, as well as an entire level grade. I keep getting C's. I can't help feel A's are for people who never, ever get hit and use only the there own spit to kill enemies.

Bad point: I guess I'll have to say it but there is no multiplayer option, not that that makes any difference to me, nor can you change ya character. I'm not terribilly upset aout this but as I've already ran into the drawf, it feels a little strange, I guess. Still this ia a major sore point for some people so I'll bring it up.

The It There Point: Neither good nor bad but the makers seemed fit to put in a plot into the game, as well as some cut scenes. I guess games must have stories these days. Still golden Axe did have a small plot hidden in there, and this one lifts right from it. Black Adder kills Tyris's tribe and she seeks revenge, which is exactly what this plot is, expect add in a dragon god being kidnapped and having to reforge the golden Axe into it as well. I don't really care.

The I'm going to be a little upset if they don't have something like it in there Point: So far I've not seen any cities on the back of giant turtles, nor castles built on a giant golden eagle. Its early days yet but one of the main things I remember about golden axe was those impossibilly big creatures with buildings and suck like on them. It might be deemed as a little "silly" but they should be there, man!

Overal: I'm having fun. Its mostly what I thought it would be, a simply minded game where you hack and slash and parry and evade and cut and burn and gorge and kill and kill and kill and kill again. I wanted that kind of game and I got it. Its not perfect, nor without little faults, but its not hair ripping bad either.

I have ordered Golden Axe Beast Rider for the 360. It might even arrive tommorow if I'm lucky.

What people have been telling me about Golden Axe BR is that it is a repetative hack and slash, with a girl with little clothing, and totally not like Golden Axe. Strangly what I remember about Golden Axe is that it is a repetative hack and slash, with a girl with little clothing. There might of been a guy with little clothing as well and perhaps a drawf with a green viking suit but ya know I don't think they opened up any different gameplay options. I'm pretty sure the dwarf didn't open up a drinking game, where you had to out drink ya opponents, nor did the barbarian dude decide to strike up a conversation with other barbarians and compare swords... Thinking about it, I wish it did.

Oddly, from what I've seen, the girl in the new Golden Axe has more clothes then she did in the old Golden Axe but I think Golden Axe is a "untouchable classic" in the eyes of quite a few people, who will not hear a bad word against it because it was "great at the time" so is now a "timeless" title.

Honestly I want it because I want a Hack n Slash game, where I Hack and Slash and Hack and Slash and if someones talking to me... I hack em and slash em. And going with a Golden Axe inspired world, with huge beasts to ride, magic and such like, seemed like a good choice to me.

Such action does not take place at the command of the will, but through the command of the spoken or written word. The Emperor is the representation - and the ruler - of the structured and regulated world. This is an ideal world like the Empress', though one that is not always as beautiful or lavish. But just because it is more harsh does not mean it is any less necessary to enlightenment; on the contrary, it is completely necessary to balance Mind and Body, male and female.

The Emperor is the opposite of the Empress in many ways. She is the Mother, he is the archetypal Father, wise in the ways of the world and knowledgeable of how to live as part of a structure along with everyone else. The Emperor does have a strong and powerful heart, as every father should, but he shows this side of himself through the imposition of strict guidelines and rules, as most fathers do. If anything he is even more protective than the Empress, because he has created order from chaos and wishes nothing to disturb that order. Underneath his royal robes hides the suit of armor which he proudly wears when defending those under his protection.

The Emperor teaches us many things, the first of which being that every rule has an application and a reason for being. If we can understand this, then his world may not seem so restrictive after all. In fact, all restriction is ultimately for your own good, because without the law and order that this card so powerfully symbolizes, the world would fall into anarchy. Government and law both draw their power from him, but unlike the governmental figures that we hear so much about in modern times, the Emperor cannot be corrupted by power. He rules like King Arthur, who brought together the warring powers of England and knit them into the greatest empire the world has ever known.

He is truly the master of his realm, and he rules with a firm hand, but a just one. He will listen to the counsel of others, though the final decision is always his. War is one of his many tools and he will not hesitate to use violence to protect those he cares about. The privileged few who are subject to his protection always repay him with the loyalty and respect he deserves. But the Emperor's power does not only extend to the controlling of nations. He is also the father, the male role model who offers advice, sets direction and brings security. He takes what he has learned, and passes it on to the next generation, so someday they can be as wise and powerful as he is.

Any of the Major Arcana can represent people, but the Emperor is the kind of energy that often manifests in the form of a person. Obviously all kinds of leaders and fathers will harbor some of his influence, but he can also show someone who acts like a father by setting tone and imposing structure. He is a regulating force and thus associated with the government, bureaucracy and the legal system; his appearance often indicates an encouter with one or more of these systems. The Emperor can also personify the assumption of power and control, by you or someone close to you. If you are the one in power, take care that you always use it wisely.

Above all else, the Emperor shows the benefits of structure and logic ruling over the emotions and lesser desires. Often, domination of the mind over the heart is not wanted, but in some cases is it necessary and even welcomed. When hard choices must be made it's important to maintain your concentration and focus, and this is something the energy of the Emperor allows you to do. When he shows a part of you, let that part of you manifest and take control. Enjoy the assertiveness and confidence it brings. Forge ahead and do what you know is best. If you can master yourself then you should have little problem mastering the world and all the things in it.

Take Which Tarot Card Represents Your Higher Self? For some reason she wants my approval of her boyfriends and says its a lot harder to get. (It's not my fault the type she tended to introduce to me were long messy haired boys in some sort of band, smocking and taking whatever crap they could get there hands on whenever they could get there hands on it.) Of course its not like I ever remember trying to get in her way of going out with whoever she wanted, and not once did I tell her to break up with any of them... But apprently I made my dissaproval of them apprent. Alas. I try to watch myself now, though its hard as I'm not sure how I actually made my dissaproval apprent.

She's also said she feel sorry for any kid I'd ever have as she can imagine there upbringing to be extra strict compaired to others. Lucky for that would-be child I'm not activily dating nor planning on to at any time in the future then.

Oh, and my sister rang the other day which is probably why she's suddenly on my mind. She was sick off work, and the bank was giving her a lot of trouble. Can you believe that the Bank, and its very own credit Card phone company are run under completly serperate businesses? Plus not one person told her the same information of the 6 people she and I ended up talking to. A headache it was. She sounded a bit better the last phonecall we had though.

Random update over!

Tales of the Abyss + Other stuff

Just in case there is anyone still reading this journal other then me, and actually cares about this news and doesn't know already:

The Tales of the Abyss anime started airing on the 4th and there are a few subbed torrents out there for download. Like from here http://www.animesuki.com/series.php/1291.html for example. If you've managed to read to this line without clicking the link and downloading the episode then I can assume you already knew or just didn't care.

----

Other stuff.
for the first time in many moons I can honestly say I spent all of my weekend on a single game. Eternal Sonata came through the door sometime Sataday morning and I started playing it. By the end of sunday I had clocked 20 hours on the game's time. Whatever anyone says about the game I will say this: Chopin is freaking manly in it. You have ya typical RPG heroes with there spikey hair, good feelings, and extra large weapons fighting demons and then you have Chopin who manages to fight all of these demons with a composers stick. Who needs swords, or even a pen!? He has a stick!! Manly!
